Homeowners who have just been through a fire expect to deal with soot and charring. What often surprises them is that the largest portion of the damage may be water. A single attack line delivers well over a hundred gallons a minute, and a structure fire can absorb thousands of gallons before it is out. That water goes exactly where firefighters need it to go: into the walls, the ceilings, the insulation and the floor system. This is why every fire restoration is also a water restoration.
What firefighting water does to a house
- Saturates the structure. Ceilings below the fire room take the runoff. Insulation holds water like a sponge. Drywall softens and loses integrity.
- Carries soot into materials. Water mixes with soot and drives it deeper into porous surfaces, into subfloors and behind baseboards.
- Starts the mold clock. Fire scenes are frequently left open to the weather while the fire department finishes overhaul, and it can be a day or more before the property is released. Mold growth can begin within 24 to 48 hours of wetting.
- Corrodes. Wet soot is acidic and accelerates corrosion of electrical components, appliances and plumbing fixtures.
Sequencing the work
Fire and water damage are addressed together, but in a deliberate order.
- Securing the property. Board-up of openings, roof tarping over burn-through, and temporary power if the service was disconnected.
- Water extraction and structural drying. Before smoke cleaning can begin, standing water is extracted and drying equipment is set. Wet, charred and smoke-saturated materials that cannot be salvaged are removed. This is the same IICRC S500 process used on any water loss, complicated by contamination; firefighting water in a burned structure is treated as Category 3.
- Soot and residue removal. Once surfaces are dry, technicians identify the residue types and clean accordingly. Cleaning wet soot before drying spreads it.
- Odor treatment. Source removal first, then cleaning and sealing, then air treatment and duct cleaning.
- Reconstruction. Framing repair, insulation, drywall, finishes and contents return.

Furniture, clothing, documents and electronics in a fire scene face both smoke and water. Items are inventoried, and salvageable contents are packed out for cleaning and storage while the structure is worked on. Items that cannot be restored are documented for the contents portion of the claim.
Working with your carrier
A fire claim typically covers the structure, contents and additional living expenses while the home is uninhabitable. The water damage from suppression is part of the fire loss, not a separate claim. Documentation matters here as much as anywhere: photographs of the water damage before drying, moisture logs, and a clear scope that separates what was burned from what was wetted help the adjuster evaluate the loss. Coverage decisions rest with the carrier.
